The Dresden events calendar is filled throughout the year with some spectacular, one-of-a-kind, and huge festivals and markets. Let me list my personal Top 5 so you get a basic idea of the diversity…
The Elbhangfest Festival
This Dresden event is held at the end of June. And what kind of festival is it? Well, there’s a nice potpourri of activities and festivities going on that’s sure to delight one and all. In five different Elbe villages, you’ll find arts and crafts, musical and dance performances, theater, and special activities for the kids. This is your one-stop festival event! :-)
Striezelmarkt
The Striezelmarkt is one of Germany’s oldest Christmas fair and market. Head to the Altmarkt for the epicenter of the Christmas market, although the festivities have now spread throughout the city. You can enjoy the holiday, strolling through the small kiosks and be sure to stop at one of the Glühwein Buden for some mulled wine!
International Dixieland Festival
Dixieland in Germany? It may sound strange but this Dresden event is the oldest jazz festival in Europe, as well as the one of the biggest on the globe. Usually held in mid-May, the International Dixieland Festival hosts a huge variety of jazz performances. Many of these concerts are held on the Elbe‘s steamboats, and along the popular Prager Straße.
Dresden Music Festival
Early summer may be the best time to catch some Dresden events. The Dresden Music Festival is one of these highlights. This festival is held around the city in the most beautiful attractions, like palaces, churches, theaters and gardens, from the end of May to early June. You’ll be sure to hear some gorgeous tunes from Dresden’s premier orchestras and musical ensembles.
Filmnächte
Filmnächte is a Dresden event that’s held in the summer months of June to August. An enormous movie screen is set up along the banks of the Elbe River (across from the castle). You can sit outside and watch the latest films in a beautiful natural environment.
