Groß-Umstadt — The ‘Large’ Well-Kept Secret Of Hesse

Groß-Umstadt does not seem to care that the world has moved on. Of course, it does have its modern comforts and paraphernalia, but all that’s so well camouflaged under the medieval ambience that soaks the very air.

As signified by the first half of its name, Groß-Umstadt does have wide open spaces, decorated as if randomly with majestic Renaissance buildings, and large tracts of land that seem untouched except by placid looking bovines. These combine to give visitors a tough time deciding where exactly they are.

Well, you’re not far from wineries, book shops, art centers, exhibitions, and all that bears the markings of the civilized world, but there’s plenty here that takes more priority over these.

Located at the foothills of the Odenwald forests, Groß-Umstadt is indeed blessed with fresh air and scenic vistas that might overwhelm city-slickers. But if you move towards the city center the kaleidoscope shifts a little. The town center is marked by a large open space that is surrounded by magnificent and elegant buildings, most of them in the Renaissance style of architecture.

Groß-Umstadt is certainly the right place to enjoy the wonderful outdoors. Free from social obligations and work, it sure seems like the world is your playground.

Have you tried Nordic walking yet? If not, here’s the best place to give that a go. They even have Nordic walking courses for beginners. So get set to go around that mountain. If you want to stick with the familiar, there’s always skiing.

Apparently there’s more than one way to land on your backside here in Groß-Umstadt. ;-)
