Günzburg District Polished Its Robust Past

The Günzburg District has always had the Danube and its tributaries to move crops to market, raw materials to factories, and troops to battle fronts. Nowadays, however, you are more likely to see pleasure craft and sightseeing ferries plying the waters, and groups of vacationers cycling happily beside the river banks.

Burgau once ruled the region, and it still features 18th-century churches and two fine museums, one housed in an old castle. But perhaps the most fascinating attractions it offers are colorful parades and festivals staged here each year, not to be missed if you arrive in season.

In the capital town of Günzburg, you can tour museums, churches, galleries and markets, if you wish. But if you have children, one absolute must during your stay is a visit to the Legoland amusement park, the fourth such theme park in the world.

The atmosphere in Thannhausen, Krumbach, and Ichenhausen is typical of the area. Watch swans glide on still ponds, take a leisurely stroll through the quiet streets, and enjoy the evening talking in cozy pubs, beer gardens and traditional inns.

As an indication of just how idyllic life here has become, Leipheim was once best known as the manufacturing center for the Messerschmitt fighter plane. Today it is a leading producer of shopping carts — swords into plow shares, indeed. ;-)
