Hanover’s theater and cultural scene includes over 40 venues where you can see the latest plays and shows. Check out the classics at the stately Opera House or the respected Schauspielhaus. For something more avant-garde, there is the GOP Varieté.
Opera House
This old Hanover theater, the Staatsoper or Opera House (Opernplatz 1), is a cultural institution in Germany. Built from the late 1840s through the early 1850s, the Opernhaus is a glorious example of the traditional classical design.
It is also the go-to place for classical performances of such operas as Carmen or Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. This theater prides itself on its new interpretations of these classic operas, as well as its ability to find new talent.
The structure was damaged during the war, but has been rebuilt with improved acoustics for a more enjoyable operatic experience.
Schauspielhaus
The Schauspielhaus (Prinzenstraße 9) also has many great performances for those in search of Hanover cultural experiences. Like the Opera House, there is a nice blend of classics and modern shows. You might catch the Greek tragedy Oedipus, or a stage production of Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart books. In short, this Hanover theater is worth your time.
GOP Varieté Theater

Opened in the 1950s, the Theater am Aegi hosts both theatrical and musical performances. With an intimate setting and top-caliber talent, this is another place to check out some unforgettable shows.
