Monheim am Rhein Is A Pleasant German Town

Monheim am Rhein took form as a fishing village sometime around the 12th century and still retains most of that endearing quaintness. An interesting mixture of the old and new await to awaken your curiosity as you wander around the streets and get familiar with this little town.

Monheim am Rhein owns quite a bit of interesting snippets as far as history is concerned. Visit the Urdenbacher Kämpe, a conservation area where you’ll find the Haus Bürgel. This is now an archaeological museum and is a specimen of what this conservation area has to offer. The building is a remnant of the Castrum Burgela dating back to the 4th century.

Learn all about the vagaries of the Rhine as it changed directions alternating between both sides of this historic building due its idiosyncratic flooding patterns. More interesting historical anecdotes and tales await the intrepid traveler.

Check out the Deusserhaus, another historical building going back to the 19th century. It now houses a museum. The Town Hall is another place of interest. What would surely pique your interest here would be the Gänselieselbrunnen. It is a lovely fountain incorporating a young girl and two geese that will surely have a few tales worth listening to.

The Picaresque Tower is an imposing structure from the 1400s which used to be a prison during the 16th century.

Other medieval buildings of interest in Monheim would have to be the Marie Chapel and the Josef Chapel. The Castle Park is a wonderful specimen of garden art that is definitely worth spending some time in. You’ll come away rejuvenated and inspired. :-)

Dining out is quite an exciting prospect in this town due to the wonderful choice of seafood restaurants. This is a must-do while you’re here if you intend to imbibe the local culture to the fullest extent. Besides, the local wine certainly adds to the experience.

Monheim am Rhein has easy access to the attractions of Düsseldorf and Cologne, especially the international airports. The Benrath Castle is about 8 km away and is a great site for exploring as part of a biking trip.
