Recklinghausen District — Water Joy For All

The Recklinghausen District sits on relatively flat land between the northern edge of the Ruhrgebiet and the southern edge of Münsterland. The district capital of Recklinghausen reflects this in that one side of town is surrounded by large fields and endless farmland, where the other is characterized by industry.

Canals criss-cross the delightful landscape to the north of the district with four main canals crossing in Datteln. They bridge across each other in Europe’s largest construction of this type.

To the northeast in contrast, is the naturally hilly Naturpark Höhe Mark with its woodlands and open valleys waiting to be explored.

The pretty town of Gladbeck has the splendid moated castle of Wittringen and associated museum, and nearby Dorsten houses the magnificent Lembeck Castle as well as the very modern Atlantis waterpark!

For a more natural, “wet” adventure head to Haltern on the river Lippe, where large lakes and lagoons are filled with water-sport activities for all ages and abilities. Alternatively, you could hire a boat and navigate your own way up river… :-)
