On the border of both Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, Siegen-Wittgenstein District in North Rhine-Westphalia is in the middle of joining mountain ranges and shared culture and history of the whole region.

And it’s not just German history — the capital city of Siegen along with a few others are on the Oranier-Route. This Dutch involvement joins up towns and cities across the country with historical links to their old ruling House of Orange.
Where the mountains rise, there are a few spa towns — but for climate not mineral springs. Several areas had such “agreeably” pleasant weather that they were famed for their natural healing. Kneipp hydrotherapy spas have brought much to the area and they acquired the prefix Bad very recently to denote this attraction.
The Siegen-Wittgenstein District also has several open air theaters — the one at Freudenberg offering the most amazing backdrop, and which receives over 50,000 visitors a year for their fantastic performances.
In the Naturpark Rothaargebirge are the sources of both the rivers Sieg and Lahn. Plus, in the Rhenish Slate Mountains there are a huge number of fossils and shells to discover on your exploration of these vast and dramatic ranges.
