Warstein is a town in the Soest district of North Rhine-Westphalia. Located just north of the Arnsberger Wald, it is a beautifully forested locale. It is hard to look anywhere without seeing the color green.
This beautiful landscape certainly lends itself well to panoramic pictures. You’ll have a great opportunity for photos at the Lörmecke-Turm tower. At just over 35 meter or 100 feet, a climb to the top will reward you with breathtaking views of the greenery of the Teutoburg Forest and nearby nature parks.
The tower is a relatively new attraction in Warstein. It opened just a few years back in 2006. It is a strikingly unusual piece of architecture. The design resembles a tube surrounded with bamboo stalks covering an endlessly spiraling staircase. It is truly a highlight of this town.
And on the subject of heights and highlights, one must-see event in Warstein is surely the Montgolfiade international. This is the town’s annual hot-air balloon festival. In 1986, the tradition began with just over thirty balloons with playful colors and designs. The number has now increased to over 300 balloons, wow!
This event is the pride of this town. It attracts close to 150,000 visitors who come to see the launch of hundreds of hot-air balloons. There are day and night performances (when the balloons glow in the dark), and even a special-shapes exhibition featuring dinosaur- or train-shaped balloons. The Montgolfiade international is usually held in the fall, so don’t miss this unique show.
One of Warstein’s closer-to-earth highlights is its famous brewery. Founded in 1753, this place is the town’s biggest employer, and one of Germany’s largest breweries. You won’t want to leave until you’ve sampled their most famous brew, the Warsteiner Premium Verum. Just make sure not to climb any towers or ride a hot-air balloon too soon after you have a sip! ;-)
