Germersheim District — On The Banks Of The Rhine

The most southerly region in the state of Rhineland-Palatiante is the flat Germersheim District, following the path of the Rhine. Sitting in this great valley, this region is filled with lakes and channels and has the river Lauter running along its southern border, dividing it from France.

The capital of the district, Germersheim, sits on both sides of the Rhine and is a busy location. A great place to take a short cruise or wander along the promenades to enjoy the views. It is also close to the medieval city of Karlsruhe in the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg.

Contained within the Germersheim District is the gigantic forest known as the Bienwald with only the town of Büchelberg completely within its bounds. Kandel has a Fun Forest — a climbing center on the edges of the woods allowing all those brave enough to climb their way through the giant fir trees!

By the way, this district and all the above names remind me on my childhood, which I’ve spend occasionally here due to the fact that my grand parents (motherly side) lived here (in Wörth am Rhein).

Wonderful, unforgettable memories. :-)
