To the north of the cities of Wolfsburg and Brunswick in Lower Saxony is the Gifhorn District. A large part of the district is covered by the Lüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide), an area of heather, juniper trees and wetlands — perfect for walking and cycling. :-)

Towns & Villages in the Gifhorn District
- Groß Oesingen
- Müden (Aller)
The capital city of Gifhorn sits on the banks of both the Ise and the Aller rivers and was part of the Old Salt Route as a result. You will find many old buildings here as part of that heritage — and also a World Windmill Museum!
The whole area is filled with historic villages (as this was where the region used to be ruled from) and natural delights including the heaths own breed of sheep — the Heidschnucken.
However, if you prefer another type of “beauty” in the Gifhorn District, then head for Sassenburg which houses the Volkswagen Test Track. Porsche, Lamborghini and other classic cars fly around this 96 km’s of tarmac — and use the 9 km straight to test their top speeds!
