Protruding into Luxembourg on the west of the Rhineland-Palatinate state is the Trier-Saarburg District. This region follows the river Moselle and its fertile valley from west to east as it travels to the Rhine. Completely surrounding the historic UNESCO city of Trier, this region is famous for just being beautiful.

With the great scenery, it is essential that you get out and about. The volcanic Eifel mountains loom in the north while the forested Hunsrück mountains to the south are filled with pretty villages and brooks and streams.
There are many open air festivals and concerts in this region including the “Highway to Kell” annual music festivities. The Roscheider Hof — a huge open air museum near Konz is certainly something for the family, as are the Aircraft and the Rail and Steam museums in Hermeskeil.
The Trier-Saarburg District is also well-known for its wines, and around Trier and the Saar valley you will find swathes of vineyards clinging to the steep riverbanks.
