Bielefeld has a robust culture of theater, dance and music. There are a myriad of performances that take place all year long. Anytime you visit, you are certain to enjoy a wonderful classic show.
Bielefeld Opera
The Bielefeld Opera (Alter Markt 11) is perhaps the most important Bielefeld cultural institution. It is the largest theater in all of East Westphalia.
The origins of this Bielefeld theater go back to 1885 when the widow of the Crüwell Tobacco Company’s founder used her fortune to begin construction on the opera house. Designed by architect Bernhard Sehring, the Bielefeld Opera has had a rocky history.
The economic downturn of the 1920s and the ravages of the Second World War have threatened its very existence. But in December of 1945, it had already come back to life with a production of the classic Mozart opera, “The Magic Flute.” Further renovations followed in 1960, 1979 and 2001.
It was finally reopened in 2006 with another Mozart, “The Marriage of Figaro” and continues to flourish today.
Stadttheater (City Theater)
This Bielefeld theater is among the most preeminent stages in the region. The Stadttheater (Niederwall 27) was founded in 1904 and began its historic run with a performance of German legend Schiller’s Joan of Arc. The exterior boasts a seamless blending of Baroque and Art Nouveau styles. A renovation in 2006 helped to restore the architectural beauty of the building.
Each year the theater performs over 500 shows, from drama to dance, so you are certain to find something great here when you visit.
Rudolf Oetker Concert Hall
The Rudolf Oetker Concert Hall (Lampingstraße 16) is a landmark on Bielefeld’s cultural scene. From its interesting architectural style to its superb acoustics, this Bielefeld theater has been entertaining Bielefelders since 1930.
Classical music is the forte of the Rudolf Oetker but it is also host to a variety of other musical performances. The International Dance Festival is held here each year in the summer.
And if all this weren’t enough, let’s not forget the wonderful location of this beautiful cultural center. You can find it directly next to the Bürgerpark municipal park. Arrive early for your performance so you can take a stroll through the lovely rose garden!
