Duisburg parks are a paradise for nature lovers. With its wonderful natural environment, including the six lakes and local rivers, it is a mecca for swimming and boating.
Kids and adults can visit the animals at Duisburg’s impressive zoo. And don’t miss the recently renovated Rhine Park.
Zoo Duisburg
With mainland Europe’s first dolphinarium opened in 1965, the Zoo Duisburg has long been making a name for itself. There are 1814 animals of 323 species and over a million visitors each year!
Today the dolphins are still one of the main attractions, with a Caribbean environment, over two million liters of water and daily performances. But don’t ignore the other animals, like the giraffes, elephants and koalas!
You can also take a virtual vacation to the Orient with the lovely Chinese garden housed within the zoo. And the children are sure to enjoy getting up close and personal with their favorite animals at the petting zoo.
Sechs-Seen-Platte (Six Lakes Plain)
This Duisburg nature destination is located just outside of the city center. The Six Lakes are surrounded by a beautiful wood and are a perfect place for some outdoor recreation. You can go swimming or rent a boat and cruise around the lake. There’s also a harbor for model boats in the Six Lakes Plain.
And don’t miss the observation tower, which offers a picture-perfect, bird’s-eye view of the lovely natural surroundings.
RheinPark (Rhine Park)
What used to be an industrial wasteland is a now a tourist attraction. The Rhine Park is a new Duisburg nature park. This former heavy industry site has been transformed in 2009 to a natural wonderland. There’s sand and sunbathing along the river banks while watching the grazing sheep for those lazy summer days.
Those looking for more activity can check out the skate parks, climbing gardens and beach volleyball court. And there’s another observation tower — the former water tower — here that lets you view the local panorama.
