Towns & Villages in the Emmendingen District

This land is full of medieval castles in various states of disrepair. For example, the namesake town Emmendingen offers the fully restored and operational Margrave Castle with its classic Renaissance style and octagonal tower.

Just a short distance away, up on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside sits Hockburg, Germany’s largest ruined castle of all and an amazing site. Prepare to feel dwarfed! :-)

Plenty more can be found if ancient history appeals, including Kastelholm Castle at Waldkirch, though it is more likely you will be drawn here by the museum. This pretty town is known around the world as “the place for mechanical organs” — it is where some of the finest fairground organs in the world are made.

Delve into this fascinating world and enjoy being surrounded by music wherever you go in this town.
