Tuttlingen Is A Gem Among Cities Of The Danube

You can make out the remains of the 17th-century castle atop centrally located Honberg Hill from just about any point in Tuttlingen.

Here you are surrounded by the beauty of the Danube River, the stately Black Forest, and the greenly meadowed Swabian mountains. Be sure to set aside some time for hiking, cycling, and enjoying the abundance of nature during your visit, lest other activities rob you of the opportunity.

Unlike many old German towns, the town of Tuttlingen is laid out in a square grid pattern, so you will find it very easy to get around.

Among the many sights you will want to see are the Pyramid Fountain at the central market place, the art-nouveau Protestant Church, the Town Gallery with its ever-changing exhibitions by well-known artists, and the Railway Museum, featuring 26 vintage steam locomotives, a roundhouse and turntable.

Also be sure to visit the new Civic Center, opened in 2002, for classical music, theater, opera, and musicals. Its Intermezzo restaurant is renowned for Sunday brunch, but you can stop by anytime for meals served family-style on large platters.

You will soon discover that Tuttlingen residents are big on special events, organizing cabaret competitions and a juggling festival each spring. In June, you will encounter the sports-themed activities of the town’s annual “Run and Fun,” followed by the Town Festival later in the month.

Then, during the Honberg Summer Festival each July, tens of thousands of people throng the banks of the Danube. You will want to be here to enjoy beer gardens and open-air concerts against the backdrop of the castle ruins.

The weekly open-air market in the town center is certainly worth a visit, offering you a Mediterranean atmosphere in which to shop each Friday from 8 a.m. till noon. Afterwards, rest your feet with a picnic in Danube Park, which also offers mini-golf, inline skating, comfortable hammocks, and a play hill for children.

One other way to relax in Tuttlingen is at the spa-quality thermal baths of TuWass. You will also find swimming pools, diving boards, a flowing water channel, and water slides here, as well as a large sauna area — just the place to unwind after a long day of touring.
