Münster’s sports scene features many different sports and activities to keep athletes and enthusiasts busy during your time here.
Football / Soccer
You can’t talk about German sports without a mention of football (or soccer for my friends in the US ;-). In Münster, the SC Preußen 06 eV is the local football team. They have a long, successful history, beginning in 1906 when a group of local high school students came together to play.
As one of the founding members of the Bundesliga, the SC Preußen play in the Preußenstadion (Hammer Straße 302) with a capacity of about 40,000. Come cheer on the local team with their colors of black, white and green during your stay here.
Cycling
There are over 500,000 bicycles in the city, which is double the actual population of Münster!
With an average of 100,000 bikers on the road each day, there is no questioning the popularity of this Münster sport. Cyclists have a myriad of tracks and paths to choose from, including the ring in the center of the city, where bikes are allowed free rein, but cars are not permitted.
If all these biking opportunities weren’t enough, there are plenty more services in what has been named the most bicycle-friendly city in Germany. Münster provides 3,500 bicycle parking places, rental and repair, and even a bicycle-washing service! :-)
Münster Marathon
If you don’t own a bicycle, don’t worry. Running is another popular pastime in Germany. With over 3,000 participants, the Münster Marathon is among the top ten largest marathons in all of the country.
(Table) Tennis
The table tennis team is the DJK Borussia 07 Münster. They have leagues for both women and men, both of which have achieved a good deal of success.
Münster is also the host of tennis events like the Enzborn Cup and other championship games.
Hockey
This Münster sport is another favorite with the locals. The UHC Münster hockey team has been playing since 2004.
